Bio
Born and raised in South Philly, Shotime is a lyrical wizard. Naturally
speaking with punch lines in daily conversation, it comes as no surprise
how he can easily entertain and control the crowd during a perfomance. His
style is reminiscent of a mid 90’s East Coast type of flow the likes of
Nas, Prodigy (Mobb Deep) or AZ. Shotime is incredibly gifted on the
microphone and you can hear the amount of thought, work and effort that is
put into every track. Coming into the game at an era where lyrics are not
a major focus of many new hip hop artists, Shotime proves that there is
still hope for hip hop and rap. Shotime is the first artist
signed to SP Entertainment Music Group(SPEMG). He is the younger brother
of SPEMG founder and CEO Scott Perry. Shotime did not get a free ride
however, Scott discovered his younger brother’s talent from the people of
the neighborhood. He would beat down his big brother’s door saying “I
can rap, I’m an artist” but was constantly brushed off. It wasn’t
until the elder Perry sibling watched a DVD aptly titled UFC: Underground
Freestyle Champion, that he decided to give Shotime his ear. The DVD, a
compilation of street freestyle battles, was the first time Scott had ever
heard or seen his brother rap. “People on the streets would tell me
‘your brother has flow’ and I was like yeah right” admits Scott.
Once he saw the DVD and the rawness and passion of Shotime, Scott knew he
truly was gifted. As the “modern day Simmons brothers” (Russell and
Run), the pair looks to "switch it up" and bring hip hop back to RAP.
Shotime, as talented as he is, only rates himself an 8.5 on a scale of 1
– 10, stating “there’s always that 1.5% for improvement, that way
I’m always looking to improve.” Shotime doesn’t define or
label his style, “I like to give everybody what they like. Not just
conscious or gangster, funny or smooth, it’s all of that combined. I’m
just an artist, I’m that slash between rap and hip hop like on a record
store label (rap/hip hop).” When asked about the current state of hip
hop, Shotime responds “Hip hop is still here, RAP (Rythm and Poetry) is
what’s missing right now. They say hip hop is dead, but like a battery
in a remote, if you shake it around a little it’ll come back on. It’s
not dead but idle, it’s a lot of bull out there right now. There are
smart, talented rappers who are just saying bull over a hot beat just to
get a check.” Shotime's top three rappers are Jay-Z, Lupe (Fiasco) and
Ludacris. The promo CD Lights, Cameras, Action is available now and his
debut album Cash Cow is scheduled for a nationwide release date of February
10, 2009.
